jelly beans jar

As part of their preparations for entering the BBC Radio 2 ‘500 Words’ story writing competition the teacher of Year 4 at Saint Mary’s Junior School in Bognor Regis asked me to make a short visit to talk about my children’s books. To generate a little anticipation I sent a jar of jelly beans to the school a few days before to my visit and asked the children to guess the number of beans in the jar. If anybody guessed the correct number they would win the jar!

Although there were some great guesses nobody got it spot on so what to do with the beans now? The children had a suggestion. As I had just read them The really, really, really big dinosaur why not SHARE the jelly beans, (spoiler alert) just like the big dinosaur does in the story!

Everyone got their own little bag of beans and I got a lovely thank you card. And just incase you were wondering… 678 beans.

PS. The competition is now closed but there is plenty of great stuff about writing still available on their website… BBC Radio 2 500 Words.
